Which set of fractions is larger?
1/2 + 1/6 or 1/4 + 7/12 ?
To explain this answer the easiest way, draw a clock.

  • 1/2 is the easiest to answer because 1/2 equals half, so divide the clock into 2 pieces. Half of (an hour) 60 minutes is 30 minutes. For 1/6 you could find an answer two simple ways. You could divide the clock into 6 equal sections and get 10 minutes. OR you could multiply the denominator by 10 so it equals 60. Then what you multiply to the denominator you have to multiply to the numerator so then 1 x 10 = 10 minutes.
So 1/2 + 1/6 = 10 + 30 which equals = 40 minutes.
  • To find what 1/4 is, you could use two ways. 1) You could divide the clock into 4 equal parts and you find the answer is 15 minutes. 2) You could change the denominator into 60. So 4 x 15 =60, then what ever you do to the denominator you do to the numerator, so 15 x 1 = 15 minutes. For 7/12, you could change the denominator to 60. so 12 x 5 = 60. Then what ever you do to the denominator you do to the numerator so 7 x 5 = 35 minutes. Finding the answer by using a clock, you could just count to fives all the way to 7 and the answer you get is 35.

So 1/4 + 7/12 = 15 + 35 which equals = 50 minutes.

40 is obviously smaller than 50. So 1/4 + 7/12 is bigger than 1/2 + 1/6.

^ i think this fraction website that I found on google is pretty cool because it shows different ways to change decimals into whole numbers, and you get to play games on it so its fun.

Go back to your picture of the bike race. Tell us all about how you calculated the Km positions at a twelfth, sixth and a third. did you see any patterns?
- For the bike race to find the kilometer markers , we divided 3 into 60 and that equals 20 . Then we divided 20 by 2 , which is 10 , because 1/6 is half of 1/3. Then we divided it by 2 again because 1/12 is half of 1/6. So 60 divided by 3 = 20, 60 divided by 6 = 10 and 60 divided by 12 = 5. I think thats the easiest way to explain how we marked the race.

What are 2 different ways to find a quarter and 3/4 of a number. Use one of the following 16, 22, or 110. Two different ways to find 3/4 of 16, 22, 110

To get 2 ways 1/2 of 110 and 3/4 of 110 is to divide the numbers.
1. 110 divided by 2 equals 55
So then 55 divided by 2 = 27.5 (that equals to 1/4)
Then you go 110 - 27.5 = 87.5 (that equals 3/4)
2 . Another way is to use this formula = numerator divided by 4 x 3.

9. Explain why 1/4 isn't larger than 7/12

1/4 is smaller than 7/12 because when you explain it on a clock it's pretty simple to see that 7/12 is way larger. But if I had to describe it in word form, i would know that 15 is 1/4 right away because if you divide a clock into 4 equal parts, it's 15 minutes. and then for 7/12 you find out what do you times 12 by to get 60, and thats five. so 7 x 5 = 35 minutes.
